Qualcomm, through its subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies, has partnered with Aramco and Saudi Arabia’s Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA), to launch the Design in Saudi Arabia (DISA) initiative.

This incubator programme aims to support startups focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and wireless technologies for industrial applications.

DISA is designed to assist early-stage startups in the high-tech sector by guiding them through the stages of product design, development and commercialisation.

The initiative plans to offer a comprehensive suite of support, including technical assistance, business coaching, and training on intellectual property (IP), all intended to enhance Saudi Arabia’s technology ecosystem.

Participating startups will benefit from the resources of Qualcomm and Aramco, including access to Qualcomm’s technology platforms, including mobile platforms, 4G, 5G, IoT, AI, and machine learning as well as Aramco’s Saudi Accelerated Innovation Lab. Startups may also receive incubation support, lab access, and financial grants.

Once operational, selected startups will have the opportunity to collaborate with Qualcomm’s business teams and engage in global commercial ventures.

Qualcomm is focused on fostering innovation

Wassim Chourbaji, SVP and president of Qualcomm MEA, stated, “We are excited to play a pivotal role in helping to foster the next wave of high-tech innovation in Saudi Arabia, guiding AI and IoT startups from the stages of design and product development to commercialisation.”

He emphasised the initiative’s goal to meet the unique needs of the kingdom and propel it into a future of advanced digital transformation.

Nabil A. Al Nuaim, SVP of Digital & Information Technology at Aramco, noted, “At Aramco, we aim to establish a robust digital superhighway that connects pioneering startups with our resources and market opportunities. This initiative is designed to accelerate digital transformation and foster a globally impactful ecosystem.”

The programme will emphasise IP rights protection and patent strategy training, with Qualcomm encouraging startups to implement effective IP management strategies early in their development. This will include IP workshops and incentives for patent applications.

DISA will build upon the tech giant’s successful track record of similar initiatives in regions such as Taiwan, India, Vietnam, and Africa.
