‘They’re telling me I don’t know how to act’: Amitabh Bachchan got emotional talking to Jaya Bachchan after he couldn’

Having worked with the best directors, producers, and actors, Amitabh Bachchan has collected thousands of experiences throughout his storied career. During the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh hosted Javed Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar, and recalled the time when he shot with Farhan for his film Lakshya. Big B shared that he felt like an amateur working on Lakshya because he had never worked in such an organised fashion. So much so that on the first day, he felt like he couldn’t perform.

Big B recalled, “For the first time, I was exposed to an atmosphere which was quite new. Hum log toh haste-khelte kaam karte the (We were very laid back and chill while working.) That atmosphere wasn’t there. I couldn’t get the dialogues out of my mouth. A lot of retakes were happening, and I thought that this was a bit embarrassing, and finally, Farhan decided to pack up for the day.” After pack up, Amitabh recalled, Farhan landed in his room for a chat and asked if there was any problem.

“He came to my room during the night. He told me with all honesty, ‘Amitabh uncle, are you having some problem? Because if you are, you and I can sit in my room, and we can go through the lines. I had never felt like that before. I felt like a nausikhya (amateur), and this ustad (teacher) will tell me, ‘Dekho beta, ham batate hai ki kaise acting karni hai (Listen son, let me show you how to act.)” he recalled with a laugh.

The veteran actor recalled that as soon as Farhan left, he called his wife Jaya Bachchan and got emotional, as he was doubting his skills as an actor. “The moment he left my room, I called my wife, Jaya. I was very emotional and told her about what happened and said, ‘They are telling me that I don’t know how to act.’ She told me, ‘Amit ji, if you are not happy, then pack your bags and come back.’ I thought that leaving might worsen things, but after that night, I became very comfortable, and the rest of the shoot was very nice,” he said.

As Amitabh recalled this anecdote, Farhan shared another story from the shoot. He shared that on one of the days, when the actors were supposed to land on set at 5 am, Amitabh Bachchan showed up at 3:30 am. “I remember that we wanted to shoot the climax during sunrise, because the lighting is very good at that hour. The call time for the actors was 5 am, and the crew had to reach there by 3:30 am to set everything up. We all reached the spot with all the equipment, and I saw someone sitting atop a stack of chairs. At first, none of us could make out who was sitting there at this hour, but as we approached this man, we realised that Bachchan saab was already there at the location, and that too, in costume. People started screaming at each other to get things done quickly because he was already there,” he shared.
