The UAE’s space sector is continuing its remarkable transformation, with rapid growth and sustained success positioning it as a global leader in space exploration.

At the first meeting of the Supreme Space Council, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council, reviewed key economic achievements.

The meeting also outlined future goals to advance space exploration and innovation.

Reflecting on the sector’s evolution, Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the UAE’s impressive progress: “The UAE space sector has undergone a remarkable transformation, achieving rapid growth within a record timeframe and setting a unique example of development and sustained success.”

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the nation’s Dhs40bn investment in space exploration over recent years, with spending on research and development rising by 14.8 per cent from the previous year.

This investment has translated into a 29 per cent annual increase in the number of companies operating in the sector. Private sector financing now accounts for 44.3 per cent of the total investment, signalling the growing role of private companies in shaping the future of space in the UAE.

Pioneering space exploration projects

The UAE continues to lead groundbreaking initiatives, with five national projects currently aimed at exploring the moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt. The country’s commitment to space exploration is not only focused on technological advancements but also on building a skilled workforce capable of undertaking some of the most complex scientific missions.

As part of the nation’s vision, Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the country’s determination to remain at the forefront of space exploration, saying, “Our commitment to ambitious space exploration programmes remains steadfast.”

Looking ahead, the UAE aims to strengthen its space sector by fostering greater collaboration between the public and private sectors, driving innovation, and achieving further milestones.

This focus on collaboration is set to expand as the UAE continues to develop its international contributions to space exploration, with significant projects such as the UAE’s pioneering mission to the asteroid belt and its participation in the Artemis programme, which explores the moon.

Strengthening the role of the private sector

One of the key highlights of the Supreme Space Council’s first meeting was the recognition of the pivotal role played by the private sector in the growth of the UAE’s space industry.

The meeting noted that private sector spending is now almost on par with public sector investments, underscoring the importance of public-private partnerships in the sector’s development.

The Space Economic Zones Program, which now includes over 200 private companies, is a prime example of the UAE’s efforts to encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors. This initiative has helped stimulate economic growth, driving innovation and expanding opportunities for companies to thrive within the space sector.

Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Secretary-General of the Supreme Space Council, emphasised the UAE’s commitment to fostering Emirati talent and creating an environment conducive to innovation. “The dynamic growth of the space sector reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to nurturing Emirati talent and preparing them to lead the future of space exploration,” he said.

The country’s efforts are geared toward enhancing collaboration and developing a regulatory framework that encourages both local and global investments, further strengthening the competitiveness of the national space sector.

Upcoming projects and developments

The meeting also highlighted several exciting upcoming projects, including the launch of the Thuraya 4 satellite by Space42 in December 2024 and the anticipated January 2025 launch of MBZ-SAT, under development by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC).

These projects are expected to play a significant role in advancing the UAE’s space capabilities and extending its reach in the global space arena.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre also presented updates on the UAE Astronaut Programme and the Lunar Gateway, both of which are integral to the country’s national space initiatives.

These programmes are designed to position the UAE at the forefront of space exploration, with a particular focus on preparing Emirati astronauts for future missions.

Additionally, Space42 shared insights into the latest private sector initiatives, including the merger of Bayanat and Yahsat, and future plans to enhance public-private partnerships in the space industry. These efforts aim to generate new revenue streams and expand growth opportunities, further solidifying the UAE’s position as a global space leader.

Vision for the future

The UAE’s space sector continues to evolve rapidly, with its achievements setting a new standard for innovation and success.

As the country leads ambitious projects and invests in both public and private sector development, its future in space exploration looks incredibly promising.
