Ramaphosa extends fresh offer to Trump amid White House confrontation

President Cyril Ramaphosa offered South Africa’s rare earth minerals to the United States in a bid to ease rising tensions that have taken a more intense dimension in recent months.

The meeting, one of the most anticipated diplomatic engagements since Trump’s fiery session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, took an unexpected turn.

Though Trump was calmer in tone, he was assertive in presenting what he described as “evidence” of racial violence against white South Africans.

Unlike Zelensky, Ramaphosa stayed calm and collected.

He addressed the concerns raised by the Americans, denounced the “kill the Boer” chants blaming them on marginal opposition factions and referenced Nelson Mandela’s vision of unity.

During the tense encounter, Trump confronted the South African president over the alleged killing of white farmers, reviving a longstanding and controversial narrative.

In response, Ramaphosa offered to deepen economic ties by giving the U.S. access to South Africa’s critical minerals, including rare earth elements essential for industrial growth.

He added that he would like to deepen trade with the US. “You are a much bigger economy than we are. We’re just a tiny economy, but we rely on each other on a number of issues,” Ramaphosa said.

“We’ve got critical minerals that you want to fuel the growth of your own economy and reindustrialize. So, we have that on offer, including rare earth minerals,” Ramaphosa said during the meeting.

Despite the tense moments, Ramaphosa’s mineral offer marks an attempt to shift the conversation toward mutual economic benefit and a broader realignment of U.S.–Africa relations.

Trump’s dispute with South Africa

The encounter comes in the wake of earlier diplomatic friction, particularly after Trump requested the resettlement of white South African farmers in the U.S., claiming they were victims of land expropriation and targeted violence.

The U.S. government followed up by initiating a general relocation plan for some families, stating they had fled persecution under South Africa’s land reform laws.

When pressed on the matter, President Ramaphosa firmly denied any state-sanctioned persecution or violence targeting white citizens, stating: “There is no factual basis for these claims.”

“We have no reports that support the idea that whites are being systematically persecuted in South Africa.” he added.

In a surprising move, Trump called for video clips and images to be displayed during the exchange, purporting to show attacks on white individuals in South Africa.

The moment stunned observers, highlighting the sharp divergence in narratives between the two leaders.

Ramaphosa’s offer signals Pretoria’s intent to stabilize relations with Washington, especially as President Trump resumes a more forceful foreign policy approach in his current term.
