Traders highlighted multiple civic and administrative concerns, including poor sanitation in markets, broken roads, lack of parking, unauthorised street vendors, beggars and sewerage issues, during a joint meeting of market presidents, Chamber of Commerce leaders and industry association representatives held at the District Administrative Complex on Friday.
During the session, traders demanded repair and upkeep of public toilets, permission to double-storey existing booths, and stricter action by the health department to prevent spurious food items.
Market representatives further sought closure of liquor vends in residential areas, fixing hotel and restaurant closing hours at 12 midnight, and restricting online food delivery services to the same time. They also urged increased police deployment to curb hooliganism in markets.
Traders submitted written demands, some related to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and others to the police.
Punjab State Traders Commission member Vineet Verma, who chaired the meeting, said, “On the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, this meeting was convened to understand traders’ problems ahead of the festive season and ensure timely solutions.”
Verma directed departments concerned to resolve these issues on priority, stating, “The Punjab government considers traders the backbone of the state’s economic growth, and their demands will be addressed accordingly.”
