A minor girl was allegedly gangraped on Thursday evening while returning home from tuition classes in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said.
The incident has triggered massive protests by locals in the area with organisations and residents calling for an indefinite bandh till the assailants are arrested.
According to police, local residents found the 14-year-old girl in a semi-conscious state by the side of the road at around 7 pm Thursday, after which she was taken by police for treatment and medical examination to the Nagaon Medical College and Hospital.
“A 14-year-old girl has told us that she had been raped by three men. The girl has been examined and her statement has been taken by a woman officer. We have collected all scientific evidence from the site and are working on the case,” Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka told reporters.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called the incident a “crime against humanity” and directed the DGP to visit the site.
“The horrific incident involving a minor is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience. We will not spare anyone and bring the perpetrators to justice. I’ve directed DGP Assam Police to visit the site and ensure swift justice against such monsters,” he said in a post on X.
