MBRSC, HCT kick-off landmark student-led HCT-SAT 1 project

The future of the UAE’s space programme is blasting off with the HCT-SAT 1 project, a first-of-its-kind student-led satellite mission led by the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC).

The Earth-observation cubesat, a miniaturised satellite measuring just 10cm x 10 cm x10 cm, is slated for launch by the end of 2024.  But the real story lies in the journey – a collaborative effort empowering Emirati students to become the next generation of space pioneers.

The HCT-SAT 1 project transcends a simple satellite launch. It also signifies a key move in integrating space technology within the UAE’s education system.

MBRSC-HCT: Joining hands to shape the future

HCT students from various disciplines, including aviation science and airframe design, have teamed up with Applied Media students to tackle the marketing aspects of the mission.

The group of 34 young individuals are being mentored by nine HCT faculty members.

Under the expert guidance of seasoned MBRSC engineers, they’ll participate in every crucial phase of the satellite’s lifecycle, from design and development to assembly, testing, and operational management.

This comprehensive knowledge transfer is aimed at driving the future of the UAE’s space programme forward.

A key project

The partnership offers an extensive educational experience, equipping students and faculty with cutting-edge training and immersive learning opportunities in the field of cubesat technology.

Salem Humaid AlMarri, director general of MBRSC, emphasised the project’s transformative potential. “We are inspiring a new generation to dream big and contribute to the UAE’s ambitious space exploration goals,” he stated.

He recognised the project as a testament to the power of STEM education and its ability to foster innovation in the nation’s youth.

Dr Faisal Alayyan, HCT president and CEO, echoed this sentiment. He highlighted the initiative’s role in equipping students with advanced knowledge in space sciences while propelling the UAE towards a leading position in the global space industry.
