THE MUMBAI police investigating the case of a deepfake video of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, which was uploaded on social media platforms to promote an app, traced the IP address of the person who uploaded it to the Philippines. The police also found a Hotmail account was used to upload the video and have written to the email service provider to provide information about the person.
The police were also in the process of verifying if a VPN was used by the accused to hide their tracks.
“Based on technical investigation of the video, we found that it was uploaded from an IP address in the Philippines. We are however checking if a VPN was used in order to mask the actual location from where the video was uploaded,” an officer said.
Regarding the mail address attached to it, the officer said, “We have sent the mail address to Hotmail to find out who used it. However, the process takes time so we are awaiting a response.” The Mumbai Police registered an FIR earlier this month after the cricketer took to a social media platform to alert people about the video.
On January 15, Tendulkar cautioned everyone against a deep fake video of himself which had been used to promote an app. In the video, the cricketer’s face and voice had been manipulated to make it sound like he was promoting the app. In the video, Tendulkar had been shown to be saying that his daughter had won a large sum of money by playing certain online games.
Tendulkar spotted his deepfake video and Aook to X cautioning his fans and the public, and asked people to report such applications, videos and advertisements. “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report videos, ads & apps like these in large numbers. Social media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and fake news. @GoI_MeitY, @Rajeev_GoI and @MahaCyber1,” Tendulkar wrote.
