The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) on Monday officially ended the rescue operations for survivors at Indrayani river bridge collapse site in Pune’s Kundamala.

An official statement by the NDRF said the operations have been called off as all the missing persons have been accounted for. “Since all missing persons have been accounted for yesterday late night as such as per directions of district administration the ops has been closed,” the message read.

Four people had died and 50 suffered injuries when an iron bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed with over 150 tourists on it. The incident happened at Kundamala, a popular but offbeat tourist site, 30 kms from Pune and near Talegaon Dabhade in Maval taluka of the district.

District collector Jitendra Dudi said the NDRF team reached within 20 minutes of the first call. Around 50 people were injured with 18 requiring hospital care. The state government has announced ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased and also offered to bear all the medical expenses of the injured.

The bridge in question was 30 years old and was supposed to be used only by pedestrians. However, two-wheelers using the bridge compromising it’s safety. Minister for Water Resources Girish Mahajan had stated that tenders were passed for construction of a new bridge but the work was delayed due to rains.

Festive offer

Tourists thronged the area as the Indrayani river saw rise in water volume due to the rains. Natural gorge as well as whirlpools and waterfalls are specialty of the area. Earlier last week, the district collector had issued prohibitory orders urging people to avoid water bodies during the monsoons.
