Dubai is set to dramatically enhance its metro system with an ambitious expansion plan.

By 2030 and further into 2040, the city will see significant growth in the number of metro stations and the areas they cover.

Here’s a breakdown of the key figures and what they mean for Dubai’s future:

  1. 32 new stations by 2030
    • Dubai’s metro network will expand from the current 64 stations to 96 by 2030.
    • This represents a 50 per cent increase in the number of stations over the next decade.
  2. 140 stations by 2040
      • Looking further ahead, the network will grow to a total of 140 stations by 2040.
      • This will more than double the current number of stations, providing comprehensive coverage across the city.

  3. 228 square kilometres wide-network
    • Currently, the 64 operational stations cover an area of 84 square kilometres.
    • By 2030, the 96 stations will expand the coverage area to 140 square kilometres.
    • By 2040, with 140 stations, the metro will cover a vast 228 square kilometres, making it one of the most extensive metro networks globally.
  4. 45 per cent transit share
    • The plan aims to increase the share of public transport to 45 per cent of total city transit.
    • This will contribute to reducing carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita, significantly enhancing Dubai’s sustainability efforts.

  5. Enhancing the ’20-minute city’ concept
    • The expansion plan supports the vision of a ’20-minute city,’ where residents can reach essential services and amenities within 20 minutes via public transport or walking.
    • Incentives will be provided for developers to enhance areas surrounding the metro stations, adding services and amenities to boost local convenience and economic opportunities.
  6. Quality of life improvements
    • The development around metro stations aims to improve the quality of public spaces, encouraging walking and increasing shaded areas to combat the city’s heat during summer.
    • The plan also seeks to diversify and enhance residential, commercial, and service spaces around the metro stations, making these areas vibrant hubs of activity.
  7. Population and economic growth
    • The plan is designed to increase populations around metro stations, boosting the diversity of residential and commercial spaces.
    • This growth is expected to attract more metro users and foster economic development in these areas.

This strategic expansion, approved by the Executive Council of Dubai, chaired by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, represents a significant step towards achieving Dubai’s vision of a highly connected, economically vibrant, and environmentally sustainable city.

As the city continues to grow and evolve, these new metro stations will play a crucial role in shaping its future.
