A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh from train passengers from Surat, said Railway Police, adding that the accused is a member of the Sashi gang.
Last month, a family from Surat left for Jodhpur in Rajasthan to attend a wedding, said officials. The family of six were aboard the Suryanagari Express Train on February 4 to return home, officials added. Upon their return, they realised that a jewellery box worth Rs 35 lakh was missing from their bag. They then filed a complaint with the Government Railway Police in Surat.
Giving more details, Saroj Kumari, Vadodara Superintendent of Police, Western Railway, said, “I directed my team to check CCTV footage of railway stations between Jodhpur to Surat and track the movements of passengers. The gang was also travelling in the same coach as the family. The accused mingled with the family members. As the Surat Railway station came closer, the family members stood up from their seats and were standing in queue to deboard.”
“Meanwhile five Sashi gang members also stood near them and one of the gang members tactfully stole a jewellery box kept in the travel bag of a female traveller. The gang members later went to Delhi and were on their way to sell the gold ornaments but they held back. Meanwhile, our teams got clues about the gang members who were into such theft from railway passengers. We caught one of the gang members and made 100 per cent recovery of stolen ornaments. We are also looking for the other four gang members and they will be caught soon.”
The accused has been identified as Ravi alias Raghuveer Sashi (37), a resident of Sultanpuri in North West Delhi.
