A gang of seven masked robbers allegedly stormed a jewellery showroom in Outer Delhi on Saturday, threatened employees and customers at knifepoint, broke open glass shelves, and stole gold and other jewellery items to the tune of Rs 12 lakh, said police. Targetting other shops in the area, they entered a grocery store where the owner used one of his ‘goods’ to stop their thieving — he threw chilli powder from a packet at them.
Unable to see anything, they were compelled to flee the store, officers added.
Sachin Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi), on Sunday said that four minors were arrested within hours in the jewellery showroom heist case. Police are making further efforts to locate and apprehend their three absconding associates.
On Saturday, police were alerted after a PCR call was made from the jewellery shop to report the robbery. A police team arrived at the scene where they found that approximately 50-60 grams of gold, 1 kilogram of silver, and two mobile phones had been stolen. Traces of red chilli powder were also found at a few shops nearby, officials said.
The crime scene was examined by the team, and based on the complainant’s statement, a case was registered under relevant sections and an investigation was launched, police said.
“A team led by SHO Virender Kumar under the supervision of ACP Murari Lal scanned CCTV footage from the area leading to the identification and apprehension of the suspects,” informed DCP Sharma.
He further said that police had recovered the stolen jewellery – three gold chains, two gold necklaces two mangalsutras and three lockets, two pairs of gold earrings, three pairs of gold ear tops, two gold rings (one broken), 13 silver rings, and a silver locket — along with five knives used in the crime.
