Bayanat, Yahsat launch UAE’s first low-orbit radar satellite

AI-powered geospatial firm Bayanat and satellite communications company Yahsat have launched the UAE’s first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. 

The satellite blasted off Friday from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11. The launch, a collaboration with SAR specialist ICEYE, marks a major milestone in the UAE’s space ambitions.

SAR satellites use radar to create detailed images of the Earth. This technology can capture high-resolution images day and night, in any weather. This makes it invaluable for tasks such as monitoring natural disasters or observing changes in the environment.

The satellite is part of the Earth Observation Space Programme, aimed at building a SAR satellite constellation. The programme will provide real-time geospatial data, crucial for monitoring and disaster management.

The UAE satellite has successfully established communication, with early operations underway. 

Space42 merger

This latest milestone also follows an announcement in late 2023, when Bayanat and Yahsat announced a proposed merger of the two Abu Dhabi-headquartered and ADX-listed entities. The enlarged entity will be named Space42 post-merger.

The merger aims to create an AI-powered space technology champion in the MENA region. Bayanat and Yahsat Shareholders approved the merger in April this year, and it now has to undergo regulatory approvals before being formalised.

“The SAR satellite constellation to be launched over the next 3 years will enable us to expand as a multi-orbit satellite operator, encompassing Geostationary Orbit and Low Earth Orbit satellites while also developing satellite manufacturing capabilities in the UAE,” said Ali Al Hashemi, group CEO of Yahsat.
