The earnings calendar starts to heat up this week with Alphabet releasing on Wednesday after the close .
Recall after the last earnings report back on April 24, earnings beat expectations and initially moved higher but then fell sharply on reports of the search engine giant losing market share to the other AI engines.
That sent the price from about $165 down to $147.84. The price has since rallied 27.5%. Shares are up $3.50 today or 1.9% at $188.61. The price is at the highest level since February 7. The all-time high price is at $207.05 reached on February 5th.
Looking at the hourly chart, the price is running from the 50 hour MA at $182.71, and the 100 hour MA (at $179.63) and the 200 hour MA at $176.59. A move below the 50-hour MA would imply a decline of about 3.25%. A move below the 100-hour MA would imply a decline of just short of 5% and to the 200 hour MA would imply a decline of around 6.5%. All of those are doable on disappointment and will be eyed by traders for technical clues in the short term. It was only July 10th that the price was below the lowest 200 hour MA.
On a break, the 38.2% of the move up from the April low comes in at $171.89.
Of course, if the price is able to hold above 50, 100 or 200 hour MA, the buyers are still in play, they just lose some of the bullishness. It would take a move below all three – and staying below – to give the sellers more control (at least in the short term), with the 38.2% the next key target that if broken adds to the short term bearishness.
What are analysts expecting numbers;
EPS: $2.17 vs $1.89 a year ago (+14.81%)Revenues $93.91B vs $84.74B a year ago +10.8%).
The stock is virtually unchanged on the year (closed 2024 at $189.30 with the price above and below that level today)
