Al Khail Road Development project completed; travel time to reduce by 30%

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed all phases of the Al Khail Road Development Project, which involved the construction of five bridges spanning 3,300 metres and the widening of roads across 6,820 metres.

The project, which serves 1.5 million people, aims to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time by 30 per cent, and increase the capacity of key intersections and bridges to handle up to 19,600 vehicles per hour.

The development spans seven locations along Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle.

RTA officials noted that the project resolves traffic bottlenecks at key interchanges and ensures free-flowing traffic on one of Dubai’s busiest arterial roads.

RTA employed an accelerated construction strategy, cutting the project timeline from 18 months to just nine. Contracts were awarded to multiple companies, with 5,000 engineers and labourers working daily and using 650 machines.

The total workforce logged six million hours to bring the project to completion.

Al Khail Road: Strategic infrastructure upgrade

The Al Khail Road Development Project is part of a broader initiative to enhance Dubai’s road network, particularly as a support corridor to major highways like Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

The road itself, which stretches from the Business Bay Crossing to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, plays a crucial role in linking Dubai’s growing urban areas.

Key locations and infrastructure enhancements

The project includes new bridges and road improvements at seven major locations:

Zabeel: A 700-metre bridge was built, connecting Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street to Al Khail Road, with a capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour.

Meydan: A 610-metre, two-lane bridge connects traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road, serving 3,200 vehicles per hour. An additional 1,550 metres of road was improved.

Al Quoz 1: A 650-metre bridge and 2,170 metres of road widening were completed, boosting traffic capacity by 3,200 vehicles per hour.

Ghadeer Al Tair: A 640-metre bridge was built, with road improvements of 1,350 meters to enhance traffic flow.

Jumeirah Village Circle: A 700-metre bridge and 900 metres of road upgrades were added to facilitate traffic to Hessa Street.

Al Jaddaf: A new lane was added, increasing capacity by 2,000 vehicles per hour.

Business Bay: An additional lane spanning 435 meters was introduced to improve traffic flow into the Business Bay area

The RTA noted that these improvements will enhance traffic safety and capacity, ensuring smoother journeys for motorists across the city.
