There are countless beautiful places to visit around the world, but only a few earn the reputation of being true once-in-a-lifetime destinations. These are locations where natural beauty, cultural richness, and unforgettable experiences create something more than just a holiday. They become memories etched into a traveller’s identity.

According to a new ranking by CEOWORLD magazine, which compiled its list of the best countries to visit in your lifetime based on feedback from more than 295,000 readers — the highest level of participation in the publication’s history — certain destinations stand out for their enduring appeal and exceptional experiences.

1)South Africa — Score: 59.76. (Rank 6th)

South Africa is the first African country to appear on the list, ranking 6th globally with a score of 59.76.

The country, unique for having three capital cities, offers breathtaking landscapes that range from ancient mountains and subtropical forests to vast deserts, grasslands, wetlands, and bushlands.

Its legislative capital, Cape Town, is especially famed for its postcard-perfect beauty. The Cape Peninsula provides a dramatic backdrop for unforgettable photos, while the city offers world-class shopping, serene beaches, whale-watching spots, exceptional food and wine, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

For fossil enthusiasts, the Karoo region is a must-visit, home to some of the finest fossils of tortoises and mammal ancestors.

2)Egypt — Score: 54.63 (Rank 24)

Egypt ranks 24th globally, earning its spot with a rich blend of ancient history and vibrant modern culture. The pyramids and Nile River remain one of Egypt’s biggest draws, offering scenic cruises, archaeological sites, and breathtaking sunsets.

A major new attraction is The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), described as the world’s largest archaeological museum. The $1.2 billion (£910m, €1.1bn) complex houses around 100,000 artefacts spanning nearly 7,000 years of Egyptian history, from pre-dynastic times to the Greek and Roman eras. GEM is expected to attract up to 8 million visitors annually.

3)Cape Verde — Score: 52.35 (Rank 38)

Cape Verde is one of Africa’s most underrated island nations, ranking 38th globally.

The country is known for its calm blue beaches, year-round sunshine, and volcanic landscapes that make it feel like a world of its own. The island of Sal is ideal for beach lovers, while Santo Antão offers dramatic mountains and hiking trails.

Cape Verde’s unique mix of African and Portuguese cultures shows up in its music, food, and nightlife, making it a refreshing escape for travellers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

4)Morocco — Score: 50.59 (Rank 48)

Morocco ranks 48th, and it’s easy to see why travellers love it. The country blends ancient traditions with modern charm, from the colourful souks of Marrakech to the blue-painted streets of Chefchaouen.

Visitors enjoy exploring the Sahara Desert, riding camels across golden dunes, and staying in luxury desert camps. Coastal cities like Essaouira bring in surfers and culture lovers, while the Atlas Mountains attract hikers from around the world.

Morocco’s food, architecture, and warm hospitality make it one of Africa’s most globally admired destinations.

5)Mozambique — Score: 50.39 (Rank 49)

Mozambique comes in at 49th, recognised for its pristine coastline and untouched natural beauty. With turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and quiet island getaways like Bazaruto and Quirimbas, the country is a dream for divers and beach lovers.

Its colonial-era buildings, seafood-rich cuisine, and lively local markets add to its charm. While still developing its tourism infrastructure, Mozambique remains an ideal destination for travellers seeking serenity, raw beauty, and world-class marine adventures.

6)Tanzania — Score: 50.13 (Rank 51)

Tanzania ranks 51st, offering some of the most iconic landscapes in Africa. It’s home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater, destinations that attract safari enthusiasts from all over the world.

The Great Migration, one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles, happens right here. Beyond wildlife, Zanzibar boasts white-sand beaches, spice farms, and centuries-old architecture in Stone Town. Tanzania’s mix of nature, adventure, and culture makes it one of East Africa’s most complete travel destinations.

7)Zimbabwe — Score: 48.93 (Rank 63)

Zimbabwe ranks 63rd globally and continues to draw visitors with its natural beauty and cultural depth. Victoria Falls, one of the world’s largest waterfalls, remains the country’s biggest attraction, offering everything from helicopter tours to bungee jumping.

Hwange and Mana Pools national parks deliver exceptional wildlife experiences, including elephants, lions, and rare wild dogs. Zimbabwe also offers ancient heritage sites like the Great Zimbabwe ruins, showcasing the country’s rich past.

Despite economic challenges, Zimbabwe remains a rewarding destination for travellers seeking authentic adventure and history.
