US President Joe Biden said on Sunday night that he was ending his run to serve a second term as the country’s leader.
Biden made the announcement on social network X in a letter.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your president,” Biden wrote in the letter.
“And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”

It’s unclear, at this stage, about who will become the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. But experts are expecting Vice President Kamala Harris to be a frontrunner. Biden also endorsed Harris in a subsequent tweet on X.
Biden’s exit comes after he was widely criticised following a CNN debate with Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
