The African Development Bank has been honoured with the “Infrastructure Deal of the Year” award for 2025 by The African Banker Awards, recognizing its crucial role in financing the groundbreaking 1.1 GW Suez Wind Power Project in Egypt, the largest wind energy project in Africa to date.

The award was announced during the African Development Bank Group’s 2025 Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and highlights the Bank’s leadership and innovative financing strategy in mobilizing $140 million towards the $1.04 billion project.

Project development and financing

Located in the Gulf of Suez, the project is being developed by Suez Wind Energy S.A.E., a special-purpose vehicle established by ACWA Power and HAU Energy B.V. (a consortium including Hassan Allam Utilities, Meridiam, and EBRD), alongside equity partners Oman Investment Authority and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt.

The wind farm will feature 138 Envision turbines, each with an 8 MW capacity, marking the first use of this cutting-edge wind technology in Africa.

“The Suez 1.1 GW Wind Power Plant Project stands as a powerful example of what national commitment and strong partnerships can achieve. As the largest wind energy project in Egypt and one of the largest in Africa, it reflects the strength of Egypt’s Country Platform under the NWFE program’s energy pillar,” Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development & International Cooperation in Egypt said.

Set to become operational in 2027, the Suez Wind Farm will generate an estimated 4,111 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power over one million households.

The project will also reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.71 million tons of CO₂ each year.

Beyond its environmental impact, the development is expected to create 1,425 full-time and 315 part-time jobs during construction, with a strong focus on youth employment and gender inclusion.
