Two years after a Zomato delivery partner was stabbed to death in Delhi, a 27-year-old man — the second accused in the case — was arrested from Punjab, Delhi Police said Monday. The accused, Surjeet Singh, used to dress as a Nihang and live in deras across Punjab to evade the police, they added.
The victim, Sagar Singh, was stabbed to death in Tilak Nagar in June 2022 following an altercation after the two accused objected to his smoking.
While the second accused, Harshdeep, was arrested two days later, Surjeet absconded to Punjab and remained in hiding before being tracked down and arrested in Batala.
“The team visited several potential hideouts in Delhi and Punjab, deploying numerous sources in the areas surrounding these locations. They also utilised technical surveillance, analysing Call Detail Records (CDR) and Internet Protocol Detail Record (IPDR) data from suspected numbers. Eventually, Surjeet Singh was traced to the Amritsar region of Punjab,” said DCP Crime Branch Satish Kumar. He was declared a Proclaimed Offender by a Delhi court and was apprehended after a week-long operation in Punjab, he added.
“Information from sources confirmed that Surjeet had changed his appearance and was hiding in Batala. The team travelled to Punjab and, after seven days of searching, he was arrested from a village area near Batala Bypass in Gurdaspur district,” the DCP added.
During questioning, Surjeet allegedly admitted that he and Harshdeep had objected to Sagar Singh smoking, which led to a scuffle that resulted in the fatal stabbing. Sagar, who was stabbed in the chest, was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay, where he was declared brought dead.
Surjeet has been booked under IPC 302 (murder) and 34 (common intent).
