Travel to US to get easier for UAE citizens; here’s why

In a landmark move to facilitate cross-border travel, the UAE and US governments have signed an agreement that will include the UAE in the US Global Entry programme by October 2024.

The signing, between the UAE Ministry of Interior and US Department of Homeland Security, took place during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s official visit to the US.

The Global Entry initiative aims to expedite entry procedures at US ports of entry, enhancing the travel experience for Emiratis.

UAE Ambassador to the US, Yousef Al Otaiba, stated, “This arrangement represents another step forward in our shared efforts to strengthen bilateral security and facilitate commerce and travel.”

Once the agreement is finalised, Emirati citizens who apply and are approved for the Global Entry programme will benefit from expedited entry at 75 airports across the US and other participating countries.

This programme will streamline the arrival process for travellers while maintaining high-security standards.

Participants in the Global Entry programme can check in at designated kiosks at US Customs and Border Protection Preclearance facilities or upon arrival at US ports of entry, significantly reducing wait times and paperwork.

It is important to note that applicants must still hold a valid US visa to enter the country.

As part of this cooperative process, UAE and US authorities will begin developing and finalising criteria for the UAE’s full participation in the Global Entry programme.

In other news, the two countries also signed an agreement to bolster cooperation in customs matters, aiming to enhance economic, trade, and customs cooperation.

The agreement will enable the exchange of customs expertise and information between the two countries.
