Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Saturday appointed Subhankar Sarkar as the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.
Sarkar replaces outgoing WBPCC president and former Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who had stepped down from the post after his loss in the recent Lok Sabha elections from the Baharampur constituency. He was defeated by TMC debutant and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan.
With the new appointment, Sarkar has been relieved from his current position as AICC secretary.
The Indian Express had earlier reported that Adhir was “upset” during the Lok Sabha elections when party president Mallikarjun Kharge publicly said he was “nobody to make decisions” on whether Mamata Banerjee would be a part of the INDIA bloc or not.
“During the elections, Mallikarjun Kharge said, if necessary, I would be kept out, which upset me,” Congress sources had quoted Adhir as saying. “The election results were also not good for the party in West Bengal. Even though I was the temporary WBPCC president, it was my responsibility. After which I told Kharge ji that if possible, you replace me.”
