The Pune City police have initiated a murder investigation after they found the torso of an unidentified elderly woman in the Mula-Mutha riverbed in the Kharadi area. Investigators believe the torso was carried downstream by the river, which has significantly expanded the area under their probe into the case.
Following information from residents, the police on Monday morning recovered the torso from which the head, hands, and legs were believed to have been severed with a sharp object.
“The torso was recovered from a location in the Kharadi area in the Mula-Mutha riverbed near a construction site. We have reasons to believe that the torso was carried downstream by the flooded river for some distance. This would mean that the target area of our investigation is very vast. The post-mortem examination began on Tuesday morning. Initial findings point to the age of the woman to be above 50. We have notified all the police stations in Pune city and neighbouring jurisdictions for information on missing women,” said a senior police officer.
A First Information Report (FIR) in the case was registered late on Monday by officers of the Chandan Nagar Police Station. The Pune City police have invoked sections 103 for murder and 238 for causing the disappearance of evidence of offence of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Teams from the Chandan Nagar Police Station and Pune City Crime Branch have launched a joint investigation into the murder.
