Pres. Trump is referred to NEC director Hassett as potential Fed chair. Earlier today he said that he would announce in the nominee early in 2026. Fed chair Powell’s term does not end until mid-May.
The Senate then must give its “advice and consent” — meaning a Senate confirmation vote is required before the nominee can officially assume the chairmanship.
So technically Hassett would “potentially” be the Fed chair until confirmed.
Polymarket has Hassett as the odds on favorite by a wide margin. So in reality, this is not a big surprise.
