Critical health funds have been withheld as a result of the chaos that erupted inside USAID after Donald Trump was elected, endangering vital services in Africa and other places.

A recent report showed that the Trump administration’s decision to pause U.S. foreign aid has significantly disrupted the supply of HIV treatments in eight countries. Six of the eight affected countries are in Africa.

However, more recently Trump recently decided to unfreeze some blocked funds to Africa, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling ordering the reversal of an aid freeze, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy.

The restored funding will enable the resumption of key initiatives in healthcare, infrastructure, and development in South Sudan, Sudan, and Congo Samaritan’s Purse, the recipient organization, confirmed that $19 million in previously frozen USAID funds has been released to support its humanitarian efforts.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the organization’s Agape Project aids displaced families through livelihood training and Gospel outreach.

This hardly dents the overall funding halt, which cuts across all sub-regions in Africa.

Africa’s continued reliance on donor agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for survival has sparked discussions about the continent’s difficulties in becoming self-sufficient on a global scale.

Additionally, the United States has been a key supporter of agricultural development in Africa, mainly through USAID.

This denotes that the agricultural sectors in some African countries are at risk from the recent funding cuts, which could exacerbate hunger in countries already dealing with severe food insecurity.

While some have argued that aid cuts from the U.S. can be managed properly in some African countries to have very minimal impact, there are still opinions that Trump’s decision could have far-reaching consequences.

With that said, here are the 10 African countries that received the most aid from the U.S. in 2024, as per data from the U.S. foreign assistance data portal.
