Apple Sues ‘Stealth’ Startup Rivos Over Chip Trade-Secrets Theft

Rivos, which has employed dozens of Apple engineers, started a “coordinated marketing campaign” in June 2021 to focus on Apple’s staff, the Cupertino, California-based firm mentioned.

The previous staff left to affix Rivos after stealing “highly-sensitive” proprietary and commerce secret details about Apple’s “system-on-chip” designs, together with its M1 laptop computer and A15 cell phone chips, in keeping with the grievance filed in federal court docket in San Jose, California.

“Apple has devoted billions of {dollars} to this crucial work,” the corporate mentioned. 

Two former Apple engineers who joined Rivos for “parallel roles” have been named as defendants within the swimsuit for allegedly breaching mental property agreements they’d signed. The agreements required them to chorus from copying confidential proprietary data throughout their time on the firm and return such supplies earlier than they left, Apple claims.

Rivos and Apple didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark.

The grievance in opposition to Rivos is the newest by Apple focusing on ex-employees who left to affix startups. 

Apple in 2019 sued a former chip government, Gerard Williams III, for allegedly betraying the corporate by launching a startup that develops processors for information facilities after luring its staff to affix his enterprise. That dispute is headed for trial in San Jose state court docket in October 2023.

Some Apple staff employed by Rivos transferred gigabytes of commerce secret information, together with displays on present and unreleased chip designs, onto USB drives and their private storage drives earlier than leaving, the corporate claims.
