Amritsar police has claimed to have solved an armed robbery case that occurred in the Sultanwind area by arresting four individuals. One of the accused was injured in the leg during an alleged exchange of fire with the police team near Verka Bypass.
The case dates back to November 20, when three youths allegedly robbed a readymade garment shop at gunpoint, decamping with Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and a gold bracelet. Following the incident, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
According to the police, the initial breakthrough came with the arrest of Baljit Singh, alias Buli, from whom a Glock pistol and a bullet-proof jacket were recovered. During interrogation, Buli allegedly disclosed the names of his accomplices — Kanish, Varun Bhatia alias Billa, and Karan Singh alias Sooraj.
On Tuesday evening, a police team on patrol near Verka Bypass signalled a suspect to stop. Police alleged that the individual, later identified as Kanish, opened fire on them while attempting to flee into nearby fields. Inspector Baljinder Singh, SHO of B-Division police station, claimed that he fired in self-defence after a warning shot was ignored, injuring Kanish in the leg. The injured accused was subsequently hospitalised.
Based on Kanish’s alleged disclosure, police teams conducted raids and arrested Karan and Varun from the Vallah area, recovering two more pistols. The arrested individuals have been linked to multiple other criminal cases, including an attempt to murder case in Mohkampura, a snatching case in Sultanwind, and involvement in the murder of a councillor in Jandiala Guru earlier this year. In total, four pistols and a bullet-proof jacket have been recovered from the accused.
